My name is David Binns. I began working out three years ago and while I was able to lose weight, I still lacked tone. I began lifting but only showed very small results after a year. Since I have started training with Armen, I have gained about 8 lbs of muscle in a short 3 months. I have more energy, better stamina, and my workout regimen has improved as well to be more rounded. These are things that I tried to do myself by reading books on the subject but that I am now convinced only comes with years experience and an extended education in training. These are both things that Armen possesses and has used to guide me to very favorable results. Using his advice I have improved my diet, and focused on foods that help burn fat and build muscle. My workouts have reached new levels with him pushing me to attain the best results. Armen has also helped me to create a workout schedule for the whole week, not just at personal training. I would recommend personal training to anyone who wants fast results that last.

Seeing Smog Clearly

You’ve heard it’s bad for you, but what exactly is smog and is it really bad for your health?

It’s a funny word, but a not-so-funny thing. Looking out across a large city, you may notice a haze of air pollution hovering over the city. It’s particularly heavy during the warm summer months. This isn’t fog. It’s smog. For the millions of people around the world who live in crowded urban areas, smog is a constant health concern.

Where does this air pollution come from, how is it harmful to your health, and what are people doing about it? Read on to find out.

Ground-Level Ozone

In the early 1900s, an increasing number of industries burned coal for energy. As a result, cities became filled with thick smoke that reduced visibility. It was then that the term smog was coined, combining the words smoke and fog. Cities may not run on coal like they used to, but smog remains a problem today.

Smog starts with emissions. Factories, refineries, chemical plants, power plants, gasoline, solvents, cars, and other forms of transportation all release nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds (VOC) into the air. When these chemicals combine with heat and sunlight, they form ozone, a.k.a. smog.

Ozone is a combination of three oxygen atoms. It’s found in the upper atmosphere above the earth and in the air around us. In the atmosphere, ozone is a good thing. It helps protect life on Earth from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. At ground level, ozone causes problems. It’s harmful to the environment and your health.

Ozone Dangers

Ground-level ozone does more than look ugly. It also damages lung tissue and causes inflammation in your breathing passages. This makes smog particularly harmful to people with asthma, bronchitis, or emphysema. However, anyone exposed to smog can experience shortness of breath, coughing, or wheezing.

High levels of smog are also known to dry out your throat and nasal passages. This results in irritation and lowers your ability to fight off infection. It can also cause burning or itchy eyes.

When ozone levels are higher than usual, the effects aren’t all minor. Many require medical attention. In areas where smog is common, there’s an increase in hospital admissions and deaths associated with respiratory problems.
Believe it or not, humans aren’t the only thing that suffers from smog. It also affects animals, plants, and the environment as a whole.

What’s the Government Doing?

Many countries have realized the health and environmental dangers that ozone cause. To combat these issues, certain governments have developed smog-reducing laws and programs.

Some involve transportation updates. Where environmental standards exist, vehicles, engines, freight transportation, and ocean vessels must be made and maintained to meet these standards. One of the common goals of such standards is to reduce emissions.

Additionally, gasoline and fuel must contain minimal sulfur. Restrictions are also placed on the type of chemicals factories can release or days when they’re allowed to release them. Laws even extend to individuals. Local communities may enforce “burn days.” On these days, people are allowed to burn leaves or waste. Burning on other days is illegal and punishable by fines.

What Can You Do?

We all want to breathe clean, fresh air. Everyone wants a safe environment for future generations. The good news is that you can take an active role in reducing the amount of smog. What can you do to make the planet a better place?

  • Drive your car less.
  • Take public transportation when possible.
  • Fill up your car with gas during the morning or evening when it’s cooler. This way, gas fumes won’t mix with warm air and form ozone.
  • Get regular maintenance on your vehicles to reduce emissions.
  • Avoid using paints, cleaning supplies, air fresheners, and other products with high VOC levels.
