My name is David Binns. I began working out three years ago and while I was able to lose weight, I still lacked tone. I began lifting but only showed very small results after a year. Since I have started training with Armen, I have gained about 8 lbs of muscle in a short 3 months. I have more energy, better stamina, and my workout regimen has improved as well to be more rounded. These are things that I tried to do myself by reading books on the subject but that I am now convinced only comes with years experience and an extended education in training. These are both things that Armen possesses and has used to guide me to very favorable results. Using his advice I have improved my diet, and focused on foods that help burn fat and build muscle. My workouts have reached new levels with him pushing me to attain the best results. Armen has also helped me to create a workout schedule for the whole week, not just at personal training. I would recommend personal training to anyone who wants fast results that last.

It’s all fun and wet, wild games until someone gets hurt or sick. Each season comes with its own set of possible health hazards, and summer is no exception!

This summer, while you spend more time outdoors, at picnics, in the heat, and near the water, keep you and your family safe by knowing the dangers that are out there and how you can prevent illness or injury.

Ready to do just that? Keep reading to learn about six of the most common health hazards you’ll face in the hot months.

Hazard 1: Sunburns

Sunburns can quickly end vacation fun. When your skin is painful to touch, itchy, and sensitive to heat, being in the sun isn’t any fun at all. Making things even worse is that it just takes five sunburns in your life to double your risk of getting melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer.

Prevent sunburns by applying sunscreen, wearing clothing that covers as much skin as possible, and staying out of the sun during the heat of the day. Use aloe cream to soothe sunburn or soak the burned skin in cool water. Take over-the-counter pain medications if the pain needs some extra help going away.

Hazard 2: Lawn Mowers

In the summer, ER doctors see quite a few serious injuries from lawn mowers. Body parts getting caught in the sharp blades and injuries from rocks being thrown by the mower are the two of the main causes of injury.

Protect you and your family this summer by keeping children away from lawn mowers, wearing closed-toed shoes when mowing, and having your mower repaired by a professional.

Hazard 3: Bites and Stings

Doing yard work, taking a hike, or having a picnic means you’re enjoying nature. It also means you’re outside with the bugs. Wasps, bees, yellow jackets, mosquitos, and ticks are out in full force during the summer months. Bites and stings can be painful, but they can also cause allergic reactions or disease.

When outdoors, you can limit your interaction with biting, stinging critters by not wearing perfume, wearing light-colored clothes, and covering opened food or drink containers. It’s also helpful to wear insect repellant that contains at least 20 percent DEET. Take an antihistamine and/or apply hydrocortisone cream to relieve the swelling and itch of bites. And for emergency situations, keep an epinephrine auto-injector nearby for those allergic to insect bites.

Hazard 4: Food Poisoning

Cookouts, barbeques, and picnics are a fun part of summer vacation, but can turn ugly if food poisoning strikes. If meat or any food with eggs, dairy, or mayonnaise in it is left out of the refrigerator for more than an hour or two, harmful bacteria begin to grow that can make you sick.

With that in mind, be sure to cook meat thoroughly and keep cold things refrigerated if possible. In the event you suffer food poisoning, stay hydrated and avoid solid foods until the illness has passed.

Hazard 5: Water Dangers

Summer heat drives many people to lakes, rivers, oceans, and pools to cool off. Keep your family safe from injuries and illness associated with water activities and the time in the water will be nothing but enjoyable.

While jumping in the waves, remember that bacteria may be lurking in swimming areas (even chlorinated water) that can cause gastrointestinal, eye, respiratory, ear, neurological, or skin infections. Avoid swallowing the water and stay out of the water if you have an open wound or diarrhea.

Drowning is also a major risk, especially for children, people who don’t know how to swim, or people who’ve been drinking. Keep a close eye on children, always wear a life jacket when out on a boat, and skip the alcohol when on the water.

Hazard 6: Fireworks

Thousands of people are injured each year in fireworks accidents, with hand and eye injuries being the most common type. While fireworks may be fun to watch, a single careless mistake can be extremely costly.

If you choose to set off your own fireworks, keep a water hose or fire extinguisher nearby, and never let children near fireworks. If someone suffers a serious burn, wrap it in a wet towel until you arrive at the ER.
